Scotland to continue playing at Hampden Park beyond 2020

first_imgScotland rejected a potential move to Murrayfield Stadium and will continue playing their fixtures at Hampden Park after 2020 following an agreement to buy the stadium, the country’s Football Association announced on Tuesday. The Scottish FA, whose existing contract was due to run out in 2020, had the option of remaining at their spiritual home in Glasgow or lease the Murrayfield facility from Scottish Rugby. The association said they will purchase the 52,000-capacity stadium from League Two side Queen’s Park FC for five million pounds, with Scottish businessman Willie Haughey pledging to pay half the amount.“Today’s announcement has been the conclusion of a four-year process to review our national stadium beyond 2020,” Scottish FA President Alan McRae said.“It was a hugely difficult decision and I would like to place on record our thanks to Scottish Rugby for their professionalism throughout the process.“This decision is about what was best for Scottish football and our members. It’s about the future of football in Scotland.”The seven-member Scottish FA board, which delayed a decision on the venue late in August, eventually chose Hampden which has hosted the national team’s matches since 1906 as well as major cup finals involving Scottish clubs.last_img read more

LISTEN: Allardyce says Arsenal were fortunate to claim point against Sunderland

first_imgSunderland boss Sam Allardyce believes his side deserved better than a point against Arsenal on Sunday. The Black Cats created a host of chances against their Champions League-chasing opponents but were unable to find a way past Petr Cech as the match ended goalless. That was enough to move Sunderland out of the bottom three on goal difference, but Allardyce feels his side missed a glorious opportunity to edge even further away from relegation danger. He said: “All in all I am just a tinge disappointed we haven’t converted that performance into three very, very precious points.“It would have been our biggest victory of the season and in all honesty after the second half performance I think we did enough to just win it by that odd goal. We didn’t but we played extremely well against a top side.“Defensively we were extremely solid and when they broke the defence our goalkeeper was very good again when we needed him.“When we got in amongst them in the second half and stopped them playing and controlled the tempo of the game we started to get a little bit of panic in the Arsenal defence and with some of the chances we created we are perhaps a little disappointed we haven’t converted one of those today.”last_img read more
